Session on Vjing for urban literacy by Ziv Lazar

Vjing: originally was only audio, nowadays its all lights, sounds, video clips, mixed together to produce ‎creative projects involving video, music and IT technology which young people can access. Ziv Lazar, who is the lecturer/tutor at Peckham's VJ Workshop. What they do is go outside, film things, then mix them up to produce a uique piece. Some of the aims of his workshops are:
-to give young people a method that allows them to express ideas, thoughts and concerns,
-give voice through media: video, music, live performances in a way,
-engage people with local community,

They chose Peckham area because it is an area of high crime rate in London. Most of the youngsters they help are generally interested in music, videos, lights, "DJ'ng". Most of them would be reluctant at first, but this program is helping them as it keeps them away from commiting crimes and gives them a whole new perspective of life. Sometimes they would go out and film anything that interest them with any media they have or that the can afford, for example, their own phones.

Community & Infrastructure
-Peckham: (why Peckham?) high crime rate 'super output area'
-The Hub: music+video education facility for the local community. It is run by Groundwork.
-Groundwork: an environmental charity, a charity that works to improve how Peckham youths live. Its more like a mediator between people and the council.

Process
This involves: -going out to shoot pictures (both stationary and mobile, working in groups versus working on their own.
-Obseration and discussion: this could be physical or cultural territories of exclusion
-Putting it all together: practical use of VJ program & performing live.
